“Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Declare, if you have understanding. Who determined its measures, if you know? Or who stretched the line on it? Whereupon were its foundations fastened? Or who laid its cornerstone? (God questioning Job in Job 38:4-6 WEB)
Commentary: The man, Job had gone through a difficult period in his life. Job’s friends were giving him their opinions on why Job was going through these trials. In a way, God was telling Job that His ways (i.e. God’s Ways) are way above our ways, and we should not be surprised if God doesn’t always expect us or our well meaning friends to know His ways.
In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. (Genesis 1:1 WEB)
He covers himself with light as with a garment. He stretches out the heavens like a curtain. He lays the beams of his rooms in the waters. He makes the clouds his chariot. He walks on the wings of the wind. He makes his messengers winds; his servants flames of fire. He laid the foundations of the earth, that it should not be moved forever. You covered it with the deep as with a cloak. The waters stood above the mountains. At your rebuke they fled. At the voice of your thunder they hurried away. The mountains rose, the valleys sank down, to the place which you had assigned to them. You have set a boundary that they may not pass over; that they don’t turn again to cover the earth. He sends springs into the valleys. They run among the mountains. They give drink to every animal of the field. The wild donkeys quench their thirst. (Psalms 104:2-11 WEB)
God made the two great lights: the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night. He also made the stars. God set them in the expanse of the sky to give light to the earth, and to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness. God saw that it was good. (Genesis 1:16-18 WEB)
Who has measured the waters in the hollow of his hand, and marked off the sky with his span, and calculated the dust of the earth in a measuring basket, and weighed the mountains in scales, and the hills in a balance? (Isaiah 40:12 WEB)
“Or who shut up the sea with doors, when it broke out of the womb, when I made clouds its garment, and wrapped it in thick darkness, marked out for it my bound, set bars and doors, and said, ‘Here you may come, but no further. Here your proud waves shall be stayed?’ (Job 38:8-11 WEB)
Haven’t you known? Haven’t you heard? Haven’t you been told from the beginning? Haven’t you understood from the foundations of the earth? It is he who sits above the circle of the earth, and its inhabitants are like grasshoppers; who stretches out the heavens like a curtain, and spreads them out like a tent to dwell in; (Isaiah 40:21-22 WEB)
“To whom then will you liken me? Who is my equal?” says the Holy One. (Isaiah 40:25 WEB)
Haven’t you known? Haven’t you heard? The everlasting God, Yahweh, The Creator of the ends of the earth, doesn’t faint. He isn’t weary. His understanding is unsearchable. (Isaiah 40:28 WEB)
By Yahweh’s word, the heavens were made; all their army by the breath of his mouth. (Psalms 33:6 WEB)
Commentary: When Moses met God on Mt Sinai, Moses asked God His name. And … God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM,” and he said, “You shall tell the children of Israel this: ‘I AM has sent me to you.’” (Exodus 3:14 WEB) This was said in the language of the Hebrews. The word Yahweh is often used to to capture the pronunciation of “I AM WHO I AM”.
For he spoke, and it was done. He commanded, and it stood firm. (Psalms 33:9 WEB)
Can anyone hide himself in secret places so that I can’t see him?” says Yahweh. “Don’t I fill heaven and earth?” says Yahweh. (Jeremiah 23:24 WEB)
But will God in very deed dwell on the earth? Behold, heaven and the heaven of heavens can’t contain you; how much less this house that I have built! (1 Kings 8:27 WEB)
Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised! His greatness is unsearchable. (Psalms 145:3)
Commentary: The Lord’s greatness is beyond our comprehension!
