Assurance of Salvation
- You must be Born Again (i.e. filled with the Holy Spirit)
- Relationship with God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit
- Faith that Jesus Christ died on the cross to pay for your sins
- Confess with your mouth Jesus Christ is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Jesus from the dead
- Understand it is not by your good works, that makes you worthy of salvation.
The following will not be enough to get you into heaven:
“I’m a pretty good person” or “I’m better than many” or “I’m a name your religion” or “I was baptized as a baby” - Realized we are saved by God’s grace thru faith in the
“finished work” of Jesus Christ.
Biblical Verses in support of the above.
When Jesus therefore had received the sour wine, he said,
“It is finished.”
He bowed his head, and gave up his spirit.
(Jesus speaking in John 19:30 about the task God had asked Him
to complete for our benefit, i.e. the forgiveness of our sins)
Jesus answered and said unto him, “Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God”. Nicodemus saith unto him, “how can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb, and be born?” Jesus answered, “Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God”. (John 3:3-5 KJV)
But when the kindness of God our Savior and his love toward mankind appeared, not by works of righteousness which we did ourselves, but according to his mercy, he saved us through the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us richly, through Jesus Christ our Savior; that being justified by his grace, we might be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life. (Paul writing in Titus 3:4-7 WEB)
Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, then I will come in to him, and will dine with him, and he with me. (Jesus speaking in Revelation 3:20 WEB)
Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. You are my friends if you do what I command. I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you. (Jesus speaking in John 15:13-15 NIV)
Most certainly, I tell you, he who believes in me has eternal life. (Jesus speaking in John 6:47 WEB)
For God so loved the world, that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life. (Jesus speaking in John 3:14-16 WEB)
“One who believes in the Son has eternal life, but one who believes not in the Son won’t see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.” (Jesus speaking in John 3:36)
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. (Jesus speaking in John 14:6 WEB)
For while we were yet weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. For one will hardly die for a righteous man. Yet perhaps for a righteous person someone would even dare to die. But God commends his own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we will be saved from God’s wrath through him. For if, while we were enemies, we were reconciled to God through the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we will be saved by his life. (Paul writing in Romans 5:6-10 WEB)
If you will confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart, one believes unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. (Paul writing in Romans 10:9-10 WEB)
For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, that no one would boast. (Paul writing in Ephesians 2:8-9 WEB)
My little children, I write these things to you so that you may not sin. If anyone sins, we have a Counselor with the Father, Jesus Christ, the righteous. And he is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not for ours only, but also for the whole world. (John the apostle writing in 1 John 2:1-2 WEB)
By this God’s love was revealed in us, that God has sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. In this is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son as the atoning sacrifice for our sins. (1 John 4:9-10 WEB)
Commentary: Other signs you have been born again are 1) you feel convicted of “unconfessed” sin; realize Jesus is our High Priest and He is faithful and just to forgive us of our sins; 2) You desire to become holier which means there is an active work of sanctification (i.e. “becoming holier over time, and becoming more like Jesus); 3) you will now “do good works” because you have become a “child of God”; 4) You grow in your realization the Holy Spirit is your Helper, your Comforter, and He bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God.
